Section 1: Setting the Scene (Location like Plymbridge Woods, Wembury, Saltram or the local park?

Choosing the perfect location for your family photoshoot is like setting the stage for a beautiful story to unfold. Whether you opt for a scenic outdoor spot or a cosy indoor setting, the key is to find a location that reflects your family’s personality and style.

I remember one particularly magical photoshoot I did with a young family at their favourite beach. The kids were so excited to show off their sandcastle-building skills, and the parents couldn’t stop smiling as they watched their little ones frolic in the waves. By capturing these precious moments in a familiar and beloved setting, we were able to create photos that truly captured the essence of their family bond. Just remember to have a change of clothes for your children and keep a lookout for accidents, wipes are a must!! Food like sweets/chocolates, yes, I one of these if all else fails to bribe them lol.

Section 2: Wardrobe Wizardry

Now, let’s talk fashion! Coordinating outfits for family portraits can seem daunting, but it’s all about striking the perfect balance between style and individuality. Instead of going for the matchy-matchy look, aim for outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Dress in Muted colours! Avoid extremely saturated vivid colours in your clothes. You donโ€™t have to be flashy or flamboyant, instead, you can go for darker colours, if you want to look good and serious.

An example is to incorporate your favourite sports team jerseys into their photoshoot outfits. Not only can add a fun and personal touch to the photos, but it also helps to showcase shared interests and passions as a family.

Let’s say your family loves spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking in the mountains or picnicking in the park. For your photoshoot, you could coordinate outfits in earthy tones like forest green, warm browns, and soft blues. Think comfy denim jeans, cosy sweaters, and plaid shirts for a laid-back, nature-inspired vibe.

Remember, pick an outfit that complements, and goes with the location, you want to pick an outfit to fit in with the surroundings, like the beach, woods, and park. The time of year, like wearing a coat, can be a great accessory to use, like a hood-up can shape the face for a lovely close-up. Try to avoid heavy branding; what I mean with this is clothing that has a big visual element like a pattern, picture or writing, not only it can easily date your images but can also take your focus away from the faces.

To add a pop of personality, have each family member accessorize with their favourite outdoor gear, like a cute beanie or a stylish backpack. Not only will this tie your outfits together, but it will also showcase your family’s love for adventure and the great outdoors. One of my best advice is to bring extra clothes with you.

Think about different seasons for instant springtime! The colour choice that would go with spring is Pale peach, blush pink, mint green, baby blue, cream, light Gray, soft yellow, spring green and lavender. The summer clothing choice is again about location and white, lemon yellow, candy apple red, mandarin orange, Bold pink/ Fuchsia, Turquoise, and Royal Blue are great summer choices. Winter family clothing for photos are hats and jackets and clothes colours are white, cream, shades of Brown, Black, medium to dark grey, deep ruby red, dark purple, emerald Green, and sapphire blue. Autumn/fall colour choices are browns like espresso, muted mustard yellow, Burnt orange, Hunter green, Darker purple tones like Mauve & Aubergine, neutrals like cream, and all shades of grey and black.

Remember, it’s all about finding outfits that reflect your family’s unique style and interests while still complementing each other harmoniously. So have fun with it and let your family’s personality shine through in every frame! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ“ธ

Section 3: Poses That Pop

When it comes to posing for family portraits, natural is the name of the game! Forget stiff and awkward poses โ€“ the key is to capture genuine moments of love and connection between family members.

I’ll never forget the time I asked a young boy to play in a park during a photoshoot. The sheer joy and laughter on their faces as they Seesaw up and down was absolutely priceless, and it made for some of the most heartwarming photos I’ve ever taken. Talking to each other is another great opportunity for natural photos on the day. Playing outdoor piggybacking and anything fun as a family.

Section 4: The Magic of Connection

At the end of the day, it’s all about the connection between family members. As a photographer, my job is not just to take pictures, but to create an environment where families feel comfortable and at ease.

I remember one particularly challenging photoshoot I did with a shy little girl who was feeling nervous in front of the camera. By taking the time to chat with her and engage her in conversation, I was able to help her relax and open up, resulting in some truly beautiful and authentic photos that her family will cherish forever.

Tip: Booking a photographer is to have a longer session for the kids to get used to them.

Section 5: Post-Production Perfection

Last but not least, let’s talk about the final touches! Editing plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall look and feel of your family portraits, but it’s important to strike the right balance between enhancement and authenticity.

I try to keep it simple! With my editing style, unless I get asked, this depends on what I can achieve. I sometimes let my artist vision speak for itself and I add this for you to view, with no extra cost. Visit our pricelist for professional photos
